I’m always in awe of NFL players, and the gear they wear week in and week out. That’s why I recently asked myself, “Do NFL players wear different helmets for different games?” After doing some research, I’m blown away by the answers I’ve found!
In a single season, players can wear up to three different helmets, all of which can look drastically different. It all has to do with safety and style. Some of the popular styles include traditional leather helmets, futuristic-looking face masks, mirrored chrome helmets, and a whole lot more. It’s incredible to see the different looks these players can choose from!
With today’s technology, helmets are made of lighter and stronger materials, with the same reinforcement levels. The advances in helmets have sky-rocketed lately. Technology has allowed for manufacturers to make unique helmets with different designs, comforts, and features. And these helmets are made to keep players safe, no matter what kind of sport they’re playing.
The different materials and designs also give players the opportunity to have customized helmets. Players can express themselves and their style with NFL helmets that come in all sorts of colors, patterns, and images. Many players take advantage of the customizing opportunities to create their own unique looks in their helmets.
When it comes to game day, linemen are the only ones who usually have to wear the same helmet for the entire season. As long as their helmets are certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), they’re free to express their individuality with a custom helmet design.
For everyone else, though, teams usually have multiple helmets in different colors to choose from. Every week, cellular, meeting room, and locker-room walls are covered with pictures of hundreds of helmets. When these players arrive for work, they look through the helmets, select a couple they like, and work with the team equipment staff to make sure the helmets are personalized for them.
The team equipment staff takes video of the players during practice to assess the fit and comfort of the helmets and suggest a customized adjustment based off of the video feedback. It’s really cool to see how much thought and effort goes into making sure NFL players are wearing the right helmets for their needs.
It’s amazing how much does into an NFL helmet. It’s no wonder why some players have become so attached to their helmets that they treat them like an extension of themselves. Just like with the rest of their gear, players take extraordinary measures to make sure their helmets fit securely and comfortably. NFL players may wear different helmets throughout a season, but it’s all in the name of keeping them safe.
