This has always been a struggle for me. I’m a huge NFL fan, but I always seem to forget about the seasonality of their games. I’m so used to planning ahead for the weather that I often ask myself: “Can I take an umbrella to an NFL game?”
Well, it turns out that I can take an umbrella to an NFL game...but it’s not always the best idea. Sure, you want to be prepared in case of rain, but in an outdoor stadium, umbrellas can be a real nuisance.
The first problem with bringing an umbrella to an NFL game is that they can be pretty bulky. Not only are they often too tall to fit in the bag check, but they also take up far too much space in the stadium. They can also be a tripping hazard, blocking the view of others behind you and generally getting in the way.
Second issue is that many outdoor stadiums have a no-umbrella policy. Bringing one in will likely result in it being confiscated at the gate and you won’t get it back. And speaking of the gate, passing through security can also be tedious if you’re carrying a big umbrella.
But the biggest no-no when it comes to umbrellas at an NFL game is actually opening it once you’re in the stands. It’s a total bad-etiquette move that could get you not only a bad reputation, but also a warning from security to put it away.
My advice for an NFL game? Leave the umbrella at home and pack a raincoat or a poncho instead. They’re much more manageable, fit easily in your bag, don’t get confiscated at the gate, and the best part – they don’t interfere with the sight lines of those behind you.
But if you really want to take an umbrella, why not check with the stadium? Often they’ll have an area to check umbrellas, and you’ll get them back at the end of the game. Some stadiums even build permanent umbrella-shelters right in the seating area – talk about a great idea!
I’ve often heard of people bringing umbrellas to tailgates before an NFL game, and I can see why. A bit of rain can dampen the party, so an umbrella can come in handy, most especially when you’re busy grilling up some food.
But when it comes to taking the umbrella into the stands, it’s probably not the best choice. You’d be better off checking it in, opting for a raincoat or poncho, or just taking a chance. After all, you still get to cheer your team on and have a good time, no matter the weather.
