I have mixed feelings when it comes to NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. On the one hand, I think it is an effective way to peacefully protest social injustice. On the other hand, I’m not sure it’s appropriate or respectful to do so on a public stage during a game. But, I’m not here to tell anyone how to feel—I’m here to share my story.
I always loved the idea of attending a live NFL game. But, when all of this kneeling controversy began several years ago, I was hesitant to go. Again, I don’t think it’s ideal or necessary to take this form of protest during a live game; but for many, it is a way to express their commitment to the cause. No one should be ashamed of using their platform to bring attention to important issues like refusing to accept injustice.
For me, it’s not about taking a side. It’s about understanding and respecting each other’s point of view. The same way I don’t think it’s right to shame or to shame people who don’t take a knee, I also don’t think it’s right to shame or refrain from praising those who do take a knee. It is what I believe a democratic country stands for.
To wrap things up, I want to say that at the end of the day, it’s really up to each individual to decide how they, personally, feel about NFL players taking a knee. Personally, I think the best we can do is try and understand both sides as we work towards a peaceful and equitable resolution.

And while some might view the debate about taking a knee as a distraction from the real issues, I think it’s actually a powerful way of starting a conversation about these issues. It’s an opportunity for people to share their own stories and experiences, which can help foster a greater understanding of the challenges facing our society.
Furthermore, kneeling during the national anthem is not only about highlighting social issues; it’s also about recognizing the sacrifices of those who have come before us and worked to create a more just society. It’s about recognizing the people who have put in the hard work to bring about change.
