Today I just heard that a few NFL players are still taking a knee during their pre-game National Anthem performances. It is an emotional topic and I can definitely see why there is still division within our nation over the issue. When I first heard the news, my heart lurched and I felt a deep sense of sadness because it brought back a flood of memories of injustices and inequality that have run rampant in our society for far too long.
I think taking a knee is a peaceful way to speak out and send a message that certain issues and people are not being respected and treated fairly. It is a reminder that we should all strive to listen to each other and to make changes so that everyone feels safe and respected. It also shows that each person in our country is an equal part of and contributes to our nation.
I know that many people get angry and upset when they see players taking a knee. My personal opinion is that it is wrong to judge them harshly because everyone has the right to peacefully protest and express themselves. The players took a knee because they want to exercise their democratic right to address social injustices and I think that is admirable.
At the same time, I do respect those who disagree with the players taking a knee during the national anthem. I can understand that they may think taking a knee implies disrespect of the country or the flag, but I believe that was not the primary intention when the players took a knee. Instead, their intention was to call for attention and change to issues they are passionate about and felt were being ignored.
People on both sides of the issue have their own valid points and I think it is great that everyone is engaging in conversations about overtly political topics. I hope that this dialogue can help to bridge the gap between the sides and lead to understanding and progress.
If I had the chance, I would have a sit-down conversation with each side and explain why dialogue and understanding are important in making positive changes. Everyone needs to voice their opinions and listen to the other side too. It would be great if both sides could have a healthy debate and focus on the positive points each side has made instead of focusing on the negative aspects. This kind of discussion can help bring the two sides closer together and help us all move forward.
It is my hope that NFL players are not only seen as athletes, but also as human beings with autonomy who have their own likes and dislikes and are free to make their own decisions. They are not just figureheads or robots. I hope people can remember that when judging the players for taking a knee.
In the end, I believe that the taking of the knee is a peaceful way to protest. And even though people may disagree on how or when to do it, we can still come together to understand each other and strive for progress. As a nation, our diversity is one of our biggest strengths and that should be celebrated. We all have a say in how our country is run and I hope we never forget how powerful the voice of the people can be.
