There’s no doubt that NFL scoring has changed over the years. From the gridiron to the track, the game of football has been evolving since it’s beginnings. Every season sees more teams vying for the Lombardi Trophy, and the defensive side of the ball isn’t the only one getting a makeover.
I remember when I first started playing football. The NFL was still playing with field goals and point afters as the primary source of points. It was exciting and intense to watch. Every score would be greeted with cheers, and most field goals were greeted with a huge amount of excitement.
Fast forward to today and scoring in the NFL is much different. Touchdowns are now the primary source of points, and teams have resorted to going for two-point conversions to make up for the lack of field goal opportunities. The endzone celebrations have become more elaborate as the stakes have become higher. Even teams that are trailing in a game often times try to make up for the deficit with two-point conversions.
But with the increase in scoring, the NFL has also seen an increase in injuries. Some have argued that the increased intensity has made the game more dangerous for players. But the NFL is taking steps to ensure player safety, by introducing new helmets and pads, and instituting new rules banning “violent” contact.
I’m not sure if I’m for or against the increase in scoring in the NFL. On one hand, the excitement of the two-point conversions is undeniable. On the other hand, it does make the game a bit more dangerous. But I think as long as player safety is a priority, I’m ok with an increase in scoring.
That being said, I think it’s still thrilling to watch an old fashioned field goal. There’s a certain excitement that comes with watching a player kick a field goal and a great sense of triumph when he actually succeeds. The tension of the final seconds ticking off in a close game can be felt by all the fans.
However, I think the NFL is in a really good place right now. The increased scoring and creativity have given teams a real chance to win games and make a statement. In a way, every score in the NFL also becomes a statement about the player, the team or even the coaches.
As the onward march of technology continues, we could eventually see a shift in the way football is scored and how teams approach the game. But one thing is for sure; football is still a physical, fast-paced, and passionate game that is beloved by millions of fans. No matter what changes the future holds, football will always remain king.
