Hey [friend’s name], you know how all my buddies love to watch NFL and how I’ve been such a big NFL fan for years. Well, I heard something strange the other day – that NFL viewership had gone down. I just had to dig into it to find out if it was true or false.
Sure enough, when I looked into it viewership had dropped a little over 5 million viewers. I was kind of shocked, to tell the truth! How could this be happening? After all, the teams are just as competitive as ever and the games are just as fun.
As I researched I found out some of the reasons why viewership dropped. It turns out that people had stopped watching because of a combination of things. For one, people have less free time these days than ever before. With so much to do, people’s focus is on other things rather than sports.
Another cause is the fact that for the past 10 years, big companies have been buying out team franchises and / or players. That means that there’s less competition, since big businesses don’t want competition, and it also means that some players really aren’t that great – so it’s less exciting to watch.
Then a lot of people don’t watch the NFL because of the implementation of the National Anthem protest. Some people find that disrespectful and thus would not watch as a result.
And finally, the league is also diverting more people to watch special events like the free NFL Red Zone channel, which both channels out certain non-important scenes and also gives out free NFL games as part of their promotions.
There are also other factors to consider, but these are the biggest ones that seem to factor in. Now, the question is – what’s the NFL going to do? To me, they need to focus on the game play and making sure there are exciting matches with great teams and players. They also need to encourage more people to watch, so they should be putting on more promotional activities.
For example, we can’t forget the huge success of the Madden Football video game. It’s been around for years and people are still playing it, so why not try to use that to their advantage? Maybe they could partner with the game and provide special discounts for people who buy the game and also attend NFL games.
The NFL should also be looking at how they can improve their streaming and broadcasting services too. They should consider how they can make the games as accessible and enjoyable as possible.
What do you think? Do you think the NFL should be doing more? I sure think they should. The league needs to do something to boost their viewership and get people excited about the game again.
