The NFL is always exciting, and I feel so lucky to live in New Jersey and be able to experience the energy and passion that comes with it. I love watching the backs and forth rivalry between teams with players from our great state. I’m especially proud of all the NFL stars that come from New Jersey — they’re shining beacons of excellence! From Saquon Barkley to Brian Cushing, New Jersey has some of the most talented and powerful NFL players in the league.
Saquon Barkley, a Penn State alum, made history when he was the second-overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the New York Giants. He is an all-around great player and an incredible athlete. He has shown himself to be a leader, and I couldn’t be prouder of a player representing our state. He has become a fan favorite and is often referred to as “Saquon-mania”.
Another fan favorite is Brian Cushing, a defensive safety for the Houston Texans. Brian hails from Bergen County, and is an incredible leader both on and off the field. He is a true leader and mentor, and is always helping his teammates strive to improve. He is also a great role model for kids across the state, and I’m so proud of all he’s accomplished.
I’m also always amazed at the incredible play of former Rutgers University player Devin McCourty. He is a defensive back with the New England Patriots, and is one of the most accurate and consistent tacklers in the NFL. He is always two steps ahead of the offense and never misses a tackle. He’s also one of the few players in the NFL who is a vocal advocate for social justice.
Finally, no talk of NFL players from New Jersey would be complete without mentioning the Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor. Taylor was an outside linebacker in the 1980s and 90s, and is widely regarded as one of the all-time greatest linebackers. He was a force to be reckoned with on the field, and was one of the most dominant players in the NFL for a decade.
Then there’s current New York Giant’s defensive lineman Leonard Williams. He’s an immense talent and a physical force on the field. Leonard is known for his take-no-prisoners attitude and his skill at getting to the quarterback — he’s a true monster on the defensive line.
Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson is also from New Jersey and he may be one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. He has the speed and accuracy to make a play at any moment, and he is a true leader. Russell has been to the playoffs almost every year and led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory.
Finally, the Jacksonville Jaguars have a New Jersey native on their team in wide receiver Dede Westbrook. He is an amazing athlete who can make spectacular plays at any time. He is always making plays that turn the tide of a game, and always puts the team first.
